Mount Barker.......enjoys a mediteranean climate with hot summers and cold winters. In summer, it is not uncommon for the temperature to reach 40 degrees C. During winter, temperatures can fall below zero, Mount Barker's year round temperatures are cooler than those of the city of Adelaide. It is generally at least 2 degrees C cooler than Adelaide. The hottest months are January and February, when the average temperature is 27 degrees C. Temperatures during the day of over 35 degrees C are common during this time of the year. Temepratures can reach over 40 degrees C. The coldest months are June, July, & August when the average temperature is 13-14 degrees C. Night time temperatures often fall below zero. It can reach minus 5 degrees C.
Mount Barker's annual rainfall is about 765 mm. Every 7-8 years we get a small amount of snow in the Adelaide Hills (normally on Mt Lofty, which is about 20 kms west of Mount Barker - its height is about 727 metres above sea level). Due to the hot summers and hilly terrain, the area is often subject to bushfires. The worst being the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983 which claimed 28 lives and destroyed 380 homes.
