VOLMET BROADCASTS.
WHAT IS VOLMET?
The purpose of a VOLMET broadcast is to provide weather information to aircraft which are in flight.
The world VOLMET is derived from the French words...'vol' meaning flight, and 'meteo' meaning weather.
VOLMET broadcasts are generally on HF frequencies and are broadcast by civil and military authorities. In Europe, some VOLMET broadcasts are on VHF.
On HF the VOLMET broadcasts are on Upper Sideband (USB).
Pilots on various international routes use the VOLM ET broadcasts to avoid storms and turbulence, and to determine which procedures to adopt for descent, approach, and landing.
The reliance on VOLMET is diminishing with the increasing availability of SATCOM and Data Link equipment such as ACARS.
