RADIO AUSTRALIA.
Radio Australia was the international broadcasting service operated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
On the 20th day of December 1939, shortwave services from the ABC were officially opened in a ceremony by Prime Minister Robert Menzies. The external shortwave service was originally known as 'Australia Calling'. One of the roles of Australian broadcasting was to counter propaganda by the Axis powers, in particular Japan.
"Australia Calling' commenced using 2kW and 10kW transmitters located in Sydney, Lyndhurst, and Perth. In 1944 a 50kW station was constructed at Shepparton, Victoria. This was upgraded to 100kW a few years later.
Radio Australia ceased broadcasting on shortwave on the 31st day of January 2017.
In his book 'Broadcasting on the Short Waves', Jerome Berg stated:
'there has been no friendlier voice on the shortwave bands than Radio Australia, whose programming has entertained shortwave listeners for decades."
