RADIO TIRANA, ALBANIA.
Radio Tirana was established on the 28th day of November 1938.
The first broadcast from Radio Tirana consisted of choral singing by Jorgji Truja and Marije Kraja, followed by the unique timbre of Kaliopi Nushi's voice who pronounced the following phrase: "Mirëdita, kjo është Radio Tirana" (English: Good day, this is Radio Tirana).
During the Cold War period, Radio Tirana was one of the major international broadcasters.
During the 1960s and 1970s Albania was aligned with China. Radio Tirana was forced to walk a fine line between anti-west feelings whilst at the same time being anti Soviet. The station adopted the official policy of the People's Republic of China which was both anti-west and anti-Soviet, whilst still being socialist in content.
Following Albania's break from China, Radio Tirana's broadcasts were Marxist-Leninist in content.
During the 1980s and the early 1990s, Radio Tirana's international service was broadcast on 1395 kHz (along with various short wave frequencies). The station was received throughout Europe during the evening and night.
Radio Tirana also broadcast on the 40m band (7mHz) which upset European amateur radio operators.
By 1987, Radio Tirana broadcast 66 hours of programs every day in 20 different languages.
Radio Tirana's interval signal was the first few bars of the Albanian revolutionary song With a Pickaxe in One Hand and a Rifle in the Other. The pickaxe and rifle were part of the logo of Radio Tirana.
In 2017, Radio Tirana ceased shortwave broadcasting.
