RNZ International was launched in 1948 as Radio New Zealand which was part of New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation. The station utilised two 7.5 kW transmitters which were located at Titahi Bay that were left behind by the United States military during the Second World War.
The station closed briefly before reopening in 1976.
The 1987, the New Zealand Government faced pressure to have a more active foreign policy towards the Pacific region. As a result it upgraded the station with a new 100kW transmitter. On the first day of the Auckland 1990 Commonwealth Games, the station was launched as Radio New Zealand International.
In May 2017 Radio New Zealand International's name was changed to RNZ Pacific.
