The VK5 National & Conservation Parks Award

This is a new Award I have initiated with the sponsorship of the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society (AHARS).

The Award promotes portable activity from South Australia's 21 x National Parks and 262 x Conservation Parks.

The Award is open to:-

  • Activators
  • Hunters
  • SWL's

There are 5 levels:-

  • Bronze (10 points)
  • Silver (20 points)
  • Gold  (35 points)
  • Platinum (50 points)
  • Diamond (70 points)

Certificates are issued for working a certain number of stations at Bronze, Silver, Gold, & Platinum level (as above).

A glass etched trophy & certificate is issued for stations who reach Diamond level.

Thankyou

Thankyou to Tony VK3VTH, and Peter VK3ZPF, who I consulted during the compilation of this Award.  Both are involved in the highly successful & long running, Keith Roget Memorial National Parks Award in Victoria.

Park to Park certificates

Certificates are issued to those Activators operating portable in a park who make contact with another Activator operating in a park.

Points from your activation are combined with the points from the other activation.  e.g. you operate from a National Park (worth 2 points) and make contact with someone in a Conservation Park (worth 1 point).  Add your 2 points for the NP with the 1 point for the CP.  A total of 3 points.

There are 5 levels:-

  • Bronze (10 points)
  • Silver (15 points)
  • Gold  (20 points)
  • Platinum (40 points)
  • Diamond (50 points)

Unique Parks

Certificates are issued for operating from / making contact with / logging unique (or different) parks.

There are 5 levels for National Parks:-

  • Bronze (5 unique/different National Parks)
  • Silver (7 unique/different National Parks)
  • Gold  (10 unique/different National Parks)
  • Platinum (15 unique/different National Parks)
  • Diamond (21 unique/different National Parks)

There are 5 levels for Conservation Parks:-

  • Bronze (25 unique/different Conservation Parks)
  • Silver (50 unique/different Conservation Parks)
  • Gold  (100 unique/different Conservation Parks)
  • Platinum (150 unique/different Conservation Parks)
  • Diamond (262 unique/different Conservation Parks)

Suggested frequency on 40m

As the majority of contacts are probably going to be made on 40m, may I suggest that a starting point (or a calling frequency) is…..
7.100 mhz.
On 40m, 7.090 mhz seems to have become the frequency of choice for SOTA activations, so lets try to leave that free for them.

ParksnPeaks

Allen, VK3HRA, has created a superb spotting and alert program called parksnpeaks.
It will allow you to spot (current activity) the following:-

  • QRP
  • KRMNPA
  • VK5 Parks
  • WWFF
  • Portable
  • Pedestrian
  • Field Day

The program also allows you to add a new VK alert of proposed activity.

There is also a list of VK5 activator blogs; various VK groups websites e.g. VK5 Parks, KRMNPA; various links to interesting websites, & APRS locations for amateurs.

So if you do intend to activate a VK5 park, then not only place your details on the VK5 Parks Yahoo group, but also place an Alert on parksnpeaks.  It is a GREAT tool !

You can go to the site by clicking on the link below….
Button Text

Some tips.

  1. Do not reply on Google maps.  Not all Conservation Parks are shown. Try the following:-     #  Mapcarta.                                                                                                                                                #  Protected Planet                                                                                                                                #  Geoview
  2. Sadly, do not rely on the DEWNR website.  It is not accurate, nor complete.
  3. Before doing an activation, add an Alert to parksnpeaks.
  4. Before doing an activation, place a message on the VK5 Parks Yahoo group.  The more people know that you are going to be in the park, the more contacts you are likely to end up with in your log.

My special NP & CP QSL cards

If you would like a special QSL card from one of my National Park or Conservation Park activations, please send me a Stamped Self addressed envelope, and $1.00 per card.
I print the cards out at home on my colour printer on Glossy photo paper.

I ask for the $1.00 because the price of ink cartridges nowadays is outrageous.
Below are some examples I recently sent to Col VK5HCF, and Brian VK5FMID.....

My progress as an 'Activator'

I am currently siting on 128 points as an Activator.
