Deutsche Welle (DW) is Germany's international broadcaster. It has been broadcasting since 1953.
A total of about 3,000 staff and freelance employees from 60 countries work at DW’s headquarters in Bonn and its Berlin site.

The first shortwave broadcast from DW took place on the 3rd day of May 1953. It included an address by the then West German President Theodor Heuss.
The headquarters for Deutsche Wekke were originally in the West German city of Cologne. Following the reunification of Germany, DW's headquarters moved to Bonn. East Germany's international broadcaster Radio Berlin International (RBI) also ceased broadcasting at this time. Some staff from RBI joined DW, while DW acquired some of RBI's broadcasting facilities and frequencies.

On the 1st day of November 2011, DW discontinued shortwave broadcasts in German, Russian, Persian, and Indonesian. It also ended its English service outside Africa.
