In 1942 Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon MacKenzie King announced that Canada would commence broadcasting on shortwave that would keep members of the Canadian Armed Forces in touch with news and entertainment from Canada.
The CBC International Service became a reality with the signing of an Order-in-Council on September 18, 1942.
On the 25th day of February 1945, CBC's International Service went on air under the name of the 'Voice of Canada'.
In July 1970, the service was renamed Radio Canada International.
RCI faced budget cuts during the early 1990s. To save the RCI service, RCI Program Director Allan Familliant announced a major restructuring of the service. A number of foreign language services were discontinued.
In April 2012 an 80% budget cut to RCI's international service came into effect ($12.3 million a year to $2.3 million a year). This spelt the end of RCI. Shortwave broadcasting from Radio Canada International closed in 2012. In 2014 the antennas from the RCI transmitter site outside of Sackville, New Brunswick, were removed and the property was sold.
