BUSHFIRES
Unfortunately, the threat of bushfire is a part of the Australian Summer in some locations. And where I live on the Fleurieu Peninsula, it is a regular threat that is confronted each Summer season.

DEEP CREEK FIRE - FEBRUARY 2026
The destructive Deep Creek bushfire broke out on February 1, 2026, burning over 4,500 hectares on the Fleurieu Peninsula, including 40% of Deep Creek National Park and 98% of Talisker Conservation Park. It destroyed 22 structures and 12 vehicles and forced major evacuations before being contained. (SA CFS 2026)

CUDLEE CREEK FIRE - JANUARY 2020
The 2020 Cudlee Creek fire burnt to about 5 km from my home at the time.
About 22,300 hectares were burnt, 83 homes destroyed, and one person was killed.

SAMPSON FLAT FIRE - JANUARY 2015
The Sampson Flat commenced on 2nd January 2015. It burnt an area more than 20,000 acres (49,000 acres) and destroyed 27 houses and 140 outbuildings. There were 134 reported injuries.
