UNITED NATIONS RADIO
United Nations Radio commenced broadcasting on the 13th day of February 1946, from makeshift studies at the United Nations Headquarters in Lake Success, New York. UN Radio commenced broadcasts on the shortwave bands in 1960. (Wikipedia 2025)
UN Radio initially leased shortwave transmitters from France, Switzerland, Italy, and the USA. By 1963, transmission facilities were obtained that had a greater reach and effectiveness that allowed UN Radio transmissions to be heard in Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and South East Asia. In 1986, shortwave broadcasts were temporarily suspended due to a sudden rise in transmission charges. There was a 600% increase in transmitting fees charged by the Voice of America. As a result, UN Radio commenced forwarded out its programs on casette tape. In the late 1980s, the number of tapes sent out was 110,000 per year.
