RADIO FINLAND.
A brief history.
Yleisradio Oy (YLE) - the Finnish Broadcasting Company commenced shortwave broadcasts in 1938 from Lahti, FInland. The Lahti site had a 1kW transmitter.
On the 1st day of January 1939, the first foreign service was transmitted by YLE, in the English language to North America.

DX programs on Radio Finland.
In 1957 a monthly 20 minute DX program was broadcast on Radio Finland called 'Around the World'. By 1960 the program was on air twice a month with the program featuring DX news and special reports from other countries in the Nordic region.
By 1965 a program called 'SweDX' was broadcast bi-monthly on Radio Finland which was produced by Sweden's DX Alliansen.
During the 1960s another program called 'DX Mailbag' was broadcast weekly on Radio Finland.
In 1972 a program entitled 'Finn DX' commenced. It was produced by the Friendly DX Club.
In 1978 'World of Radio' commenced and was broadcast on a fortnightly basis.

Shortwave transmissions cease.
YLE ceased all shortwave broadcasts in December 2006, in favour of internet, mobile and satellite services.
Finnish expatriates had campaigning for a continued service, however they were unsuccessful in maintaining the shortwave service.
YLE's Director of Corporate Technology, Jorma Laiho, stated that he believed few people would miss the shortwave service.
