Long before radio, messages were delivered locally by people on horseback.

For longer-distance messages, messages were carried across the oceans by ship.

James Clerk Maxwell proposed theories of electromagnetism.

Charles Todd is responsible for the Australian overland telegraph, a 3,200 km line connecting Port Augusta in South Australia to Darwin.

Heinrich Rudolf Hertz published the results of experiments wherein he was able to transmit electromagnetic waves through the air.

Guglielmo Marconi developed a spark-gap transmitter.

Marconi sent the first transatlantic radio signal cross the Atlantic Ocean.

The world's first audio radio broadcast occurred on Christmas Eve 1906 by Canadian-born inventor Reginald Fessenden.
