ROY WYLIE

Roy Wylie was born on the 27th day of June 1895, at Adelaide, South Australia.  His parents were Benjamin Robert Brown and Johanna Mary Wylie.  (ancestry 2016)
Roy was raised by his grandparents, George & Harriet Wylie.  His mother and father were not married at the time of his birth, and they were not in a position to care for him.  They married 4 years later in 1899, but his grandparents continued to raise Roy.  (Alexandrina 2022) (NAA 2019)
Roy enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on the 12th day of September 1914, at Morphettville, South Australia.  He was recorded as being 5 feet 9 inches tall, 144 lbs, fresh complexion, fair hair, with blue eyes.  His occupation was recorded as a painter.  His grandfather George of Strathalbyn was recorded as his next of kin.  (NAA 2019)

Roy embarked Melbourne on the 22nd day of December 1914, aboard the H.M.A.T. A 40 Ceramic.  Roy served with the 16th Battalion with the AIF.  (NAA 2019)
Roy died on the 2nd day of May 1915 at Gallipoli, Canakkale, Turkey, aged 19 years.  (ancestry 2016) (NAA 2019)

Roy's inventory of effects were as follows:

Roy was awarded the 1914-1919 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal.  (NAA 2019)
It was reported that Roy was 'a good lad and much attached to his grandparents.'  (NAA 2019)
Roy's body was never found.  He has a memorial at the Lone Pine Memorial Cemetery.  (Alexandrina 2022) (ancestry 2016)
Roy has a memorial shield on the headstone of his grandparents which can be found at Plot 60, Row B, Division 2.
