Cecil Wood Cross was born on the 29th day of June 1897, at Hartley, South Australia. His parents were Joseph Rayner Bunnett and Ethel May 'Fanny' Cross.

Cecil was a member of Strathalbyn's four-man cycling team. All four members came from Hartley.
In 1924, the South Australian League of Wheelmen held the Inter-club teams race of 21 miles. District clubs were represented by a team of four riders. The Hartley boys won the race, finishing in a bunch, covering the 21 miles in 60 minutes 15 seconds. They were responsible for the four fastest times of the day. (1924 The Register)

The four men wore the blue and white football guernseys of the Hartley Football Club.
